Purple represents Alonso's royalty, and the gold represents Alonso's riches. The grey crown with the black background represents the darkside of Alonso's ruling, an example of this being when he helped Antonio kick Prospero out of Milan.

Alonso was very quiet and had little outward emotion during The Tempest. I think that his behavior may have something to do with what was going on in his country during his reign.

1. The Kingdom of Naples, comprising the southern part of the Italian peninsula, was the remainder of the old Kingdom of Sicily after secession of the island of Sicily as a result of the Sicilian Vespers rebellion of 1282.

2. In the days of Alonso the King was the supreme ruler of the land, and it was decided by a bloodline of who would be next in line. Alonso's son would be Ferdinand, and Ferdinand would be next to be king of Naples. A father of a child will mourn his sons death no matter what, but since Ferdinand is a future king, Alonso probably felt like he let himself, and his country down.

3. Naples was a Papal state. This means the pope lived there. Alonso was probably a religious man
This is the pope. He lives in Italy, and he probably has been to and seen the same places as King Alonso

. Im suprised we didn't see any members of Alonso's group praying. This leads me to belive that maybe Shakespeare wasn't religious.

4. Alonso shows alot of Shakespeare's own problems throughout the plot of The Tempest. Shakespeare lost his son, and he wrote about a man who was dealing with the same problem.

5. Mount Vesuvius eruppted in 1631. Alonso had to deal with all the death and destruction. He didn't show much emotion when the ship wrecked, possibly becasue he was used to the destruction.

6. Giordano Bruno who was a famous Italian mathmatician and philosipher was put to death by the king. Alonso didn't like the idea of scientific explanations of life. Alonso was most likely an intense Catholic. In the 1600's catholics belived that god was the creator of everything, and the earth was the center of the universe

7. Alonso was probably very worried that he was going insane when he saw the spirits. In the 1600's if people thought the King was
This is a happy king. This shows how Alonso felt at the end of the play. Alonso was very happy that he found his son, and that Prospero forgave him.

unfit to rule then they would hang, because that was one of the main ways of exicution of that time period.

8. The Franco-Spanish war takes place in northern Italy in164. Wars are very costly, they are even worse when two other countries are fighting in your homelnd, and Alonso could do nothing about it. This could be related to the way he let others sway him however they wanted. If he couldn't put his foot down to France and Spain, Im not suprised he couldn't put his foot down to Antonio, Sebastian, and Gonzalo

9. The Itallian plauge of 1629-1631 leaving 130,000 dead. The city of Milan was hit the hardest they had 60,000 casualties alone. Alonso was probably very worried about Ferdinand at this time, becase as we know.....Ferdinand was the heir to the throne.

10. Another was was started in Venice when the Knights of Malta looted a Ottoman convoy. The Ottomans attaked Venice in search of revenge on the Knights of Malta. Alonso never called for violence in the play, he actually hated it, like when Antonio had his sword out when Alonso woke up. Alonso got kind of angry at Antonio after that incident. Alonso didn't like violence in the play, and im sure he didn't like it when he was at home.

This is an evil king to represnt Alonso's evil side. His evil isn't really represented during the play, but we know it is there because he kicked Prospero out of Milan

This song gives reference to how Alonso feels throughout the play in many ways. The most noticable way is Alonso probably felt like he was going crazy when he encountered the odd events that happened in a very scary three hour trip to an island. There are other refferences about how King Alonso feels about Antonio in this song if you listen closely.
